Theodore Johnson, clarinetist for 36 years with The Cleveland Orchestra, has developed a state of the art clarinet mouthpiece. His performance skills, as well as his experience as a teacher at numerous conservatories, have lead to the development of a mouthpiece which allows the performer to concentrate on making music rather then being distracted by tone production and intonation problems. The warm focused sound lies somewhere between the French and German Schools of clarinet sound. This mouthpiece is ideal for the young beginning clarinetist, the aspiring advanced musician, and the professional clarinetist.

New items now available are a ligature, swab and comfort neck strap. The ligature is available in plated silver for a darker sound and nickel silver for a lighter sound. Each produces a distinctively different vibrating potential of the reed and reduces warping of the reed.

The patent pending clarinet Speed Swab is the newest product from the shop of Theodore Johnson. This ingenious device was developed after 36 years as a clarinetist with The Cleveland Orchestra. Frequently, clarinetists only have a few seconds to clean out the instrument before the next entrance. Without removing the mouthpiece or the reed, the Speed Swab provides the performer with a quick and efficient way of cleaning the horn. The tip of the swab will stop when it extends about 2 inches past the top of the barrel on a B flat clarinet and about 1.5 inches past the top of the barrel on an A clarinet. On either horn, the swab will not go far enough to affect the top of the mouthpiece or reed. The 100% silk swab is on a 3 piece rod that can easily be stored in most clarinet cases. For quick access during a concert or rehearsal, the Speed Swab attaches with a clip to the top of your music stand. You will not be disappointed with this new product!

The Comfort Neck Strap & Assembly are designed to take weight off the right hand allowing greater flexibility of the right hand fingers. The width of the strap relieves neck discomfort. The elastic apparatus allows for a more substantial fit. The assembly allows easy hookup.

History of Ligature

Mr. Johnson wrestled with the problems of ligatures over his career, and as a result he developed two ligatures with different combinations of alloys to enhance the reed vibration and reduce reed warping.

  • silver plated to produce a darker sound
  • nickel silver plated to produce a brighter sound

History of Comfort Neck Strap

During years of conservatory teaching and being confronted with student's hand problems, this led Mr. Johnson to develop a strap that would improve the flexibility of the right hand functions by taking the weight off the thumb and relieving carpal tunnel.
